From prim ponytails and pumps to afros and aviator glasses, African American style from one decade to the next has always been stunning and inventive. Michael McCollom has pulled together an extensive collection of original photographs, all featuring black men and women looking their "best" in wonderfully original clothing, hairstyles, and accessories from years gone by.
The photographs in this collection for the most part do not feature models or celebrities; these are ordinary people looking fabulous as they pose for their friend's camera. Some of their outfits are zany, others elegant; some are hip and others casual. Each photo is an honest snapshot of a particular time, place, and personality. Together, these images serve as an extraordinary tribute to the boldness and ingenuity of black style throughout the decades.
About the Author:
Michael McCollom is a designer and professional photographer. He was born and raised in the Midwest but moved to New York City to begin his career in fashion. Vogue named him a "Designer to Watch" in 1990, and he has since gained recognition as a designer and photographer, working with a celebrity clientele that includes Mariah Carey, the late Whitney Houston, and Julia Roberts. His first solo photography exhibition took place in New York's SoHo district in 2002. He has continued to curate exhibits throughout the city, including the 2006–2007 Museum of the City of New York's ground-breaking fashion exhibition "Black Style Now." He is currently the creative director for Trilogy and Fleurette, luxury goods collections. He lives and works in New York City.
